주전공분야는 스와힐리어학이다. 학부 단계부터 스와힐리어와 문학을 공부했다. 나이로비대학교에서 스와힐리어학, 일반언어학과 스와힐리어 문학을 아우르는 스와힐리학을 전공했다. 벨기에 헨트대학교 아프리카 언어·문화학과에서 언어학 박사학위를 받았다. 핵심 연구분야는 스와힐리어를 포함한 반투諸語이며, 사회언어학과 언어접촉과 관련된 주제에 초점을 맞춰 연구를 수행했다.
